DSA IT Audit Device Remediation
Are your departmental devices fully secure and audit‑ready? Learn how the Device Remediation Audit helps identify gaps, reduce security risk, and keep systems compliant through hands‑on validation and updates by IT technicians.
Overview
The Device Remediation Audit is part of an ongoing effort to ensure all departmental devices meet required security and compliance standards. This initiative focuses on identifying and addressing systems that may not be fully updated, properly configured, or consistently connected to university management tools. IT technicians will visit departments to validate device settings, confirm connectivity, and initiate necessary updates where needed. These activities support improved visibility, reduce security risks, and help maintain accurate asset management across the environment, which is critical for audit readiness. Overall, the remediation process ensures devices remain secure, compliant, and operating effectively within university systems.

F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
---
Q: What time will someone come on our scheduled date? A: We can arrive any time that works for your group. Generally, they will arrive around 9 AM or 10 AM on most mornings, but if there’s a better time frame you would like for us to arrive, then we’d be happy to discuss.
Q: What do I need to do if I need to change a scheduled date? A: If there is are any scheduling conflicts, please reach out to [email protected] at least 7 days in advance of the target date.
Q: Will all devices in my department be audited? A: No, only a small subset of DSA-managed departmental devices will be selected for review.
Q: What specifically will the IT Technicians be doing? A: The IT technicians will verify that the departmental devices are properly powered and connected to the network, ensure devices remain powered on, adjust power settings so desktops do not enter sleep mode and laptops stay awake while plugged in, and manually check for Windows updates through Microsoft Update.
Q: Will this impact users during the visit? A: The affected devices may receive updates during the visit, which could temporarily interrupt use.
Q: Can these devices be removed from the network and put back on the network at the request of the department to save time and manpower? A: No. This would be an unplanned disruptive process that would be better handled if fully prepared for. Due to feedback, many of these devices may also be surplused. Right now, going through the DSA IT Audit Device Remediation procedure is the best proactive action.
Q: What does the “Discovery Date” mean when looking at the status of a device? A: This means that a network port connection was made just long enough for it to gather basic information on the device. However, if the device has made the audit list, it most likely means it was not connected long enough to complete all updates and enter a compliant state. The device will need to be checked to ensure that it can be connected long enough to perform these tasks.
Q: Who will be coming to our department to help remediate our devices? A: Who comes out will probably vary a bit due to student worker scheduling, but the constant we do have is that Mark Macorol is our remediation lead at the Service Desk; he will be the one primarily running the work.
